Our Year In a Whole
Steam Science 2K16 has been such an adventure, not only for me, but for everybody and as a whole class. As we weren’t ready for what could possible happen, we gave it our all. We the “Guinea Pigs” took on the challenge of being the first branch off STEAM at Perry Central. In the beginning our class consist of an equal 2 students per grade of 9-12. Sam Rockwell and Addy Davis taking on the freshmen challenge with Logan Hubert and Lane Hilgenhold in the sophomore spot. For the upper classmates, Olivia Wright and Ryann Lynch rack up the Junior spots, and Aaron Lutgring and Amber Willis taking the seniority spot. With a great science teacher to lead us the way to success, we could plan and accomplished many objectives. As many of us didn’t know where to start, we made many post- it notes for different ideas, calling it our thinking board. Then Mrs. Harris came up with this awesome ideal of doing a group project first, to get us started. Our first project was the Jelly Fish Adventure. We did a research project and then turned it into a field trip, as there are Jelly Fish in the Indian- Celina Lakes in Perry County, Indiana. After this group project, we all went our separate ways. Lane and Aaron tagged up to attempted some myth busters, while Amber and Addy looked at photography and fashion. Logan researched about sport injuries and diabetes, as Olivia researched about Childhood Cancer. Ryann investigated into the essential oils, as she made her own. Sam placed his time into 3- D printing and movie maker. Everybody met back up again for a Spooky Science Day, they displayed for the elementary kids. There were different actives, such as bubbles, foam, cornstarch fun, the making of the dry ice process, and Mrs. Harris almost burning Aaron’s hand off. After the fun filled 3 days, we went back to our individual projects until our Science Day during a boy’s basketball game. We displayed our work and projects to the community, even having a hovercraft for kids and adults to ride. That night was a blast, but also a little stressful. Then according to Dr. Clark, we tried bombing the school with our liquid nitrogen experiment, in which was very loud. We went our own projects of myth busted, pig dissection, fashion, cardboard strength, essential oils, brain functions, and 3- D printing. It was long after we got started our individual projects, that we had another group activity. Spelunking was a new experience for many of us, but it was very interesting and fun! Seeing how different species living in complete darkness survive and see how long it takes for things to grow was amazing. It took about 2 weeks later for us to decide, we wanted a final group project. So we brought back the Cardboard Boat from 15 years ago. Some were tiny, some were very well wrapped in duct tape, and some were huge. That day was great! Steam Science with a victory as Olivia and Ry’s boat won with the only boat making it to the ropes and floating a whopping 27 minutes. As we roll to an end, everybody was very satisfied with their accomplishments and work, some not as much. If there is one thing we have all learn this year, it’s that even with all the errors in life, there is always a way around it, you just have to improvise and never give up. Steam Science was a very successful year and if you ask anyone, they would agree with you.
