our experience
On Tuesday, August, 25 Mrs. Harris Steam Science class went
on an trip to find fresh water jelly fish!
We started out by going to Lake Celina where we meet up with three
former teachers that helped us collect the jellyfish and supplied us with the kayaks.
We buckled up our life jackets and jumped into the kayaks to look for these very
small freshwater jellys. We were lucky enough to find some right off of the
bank! We collected them by using little bottles and scooping them out of the
water! Where we found large groups of
jelly fish we would take some test. These test included the temp of the water
and the clearness of the water using a secchi disk. (look below to see how we made it) This tool is where you
lower the disk down into the water until you can’t see it any more then measure
it! After we had captured around 45 jelly fish from different places in the
lake, we took the long paddle back to the boat dock! Here we got a 5 gallon
bucket of water for the tank and then loaded up they kayaks and headed to
Indian lake which is just a mile or two away. There we looked for some jelly
fish but could not find any(which was expected). We also did the same test on
this lake and collected buckets of water. Following that we headed back to
school where we had two tanks set up. We placed water from Celina Lake in one
tank and water from Indian into a different tank. We then placed 15 jelly fish
into each tank then placed the extra in the larger tank that had Indian water
in it. The Jelly fish were doing perfectly fine after a few days then we started feeding them small bits of fish eggs.
To make the secchi disk we took a 12 inch circle of plexiglass and started by dividing it into four sections using tape. One group of the opposite sections was painted white and the other sections were painted black. After the paint dried we measured out the middle of the disk and drilled a hole were we ran the rope through.
