Well time is ticking down and 4H is right around the corner. This year I have to make a horse poster again. Last year I made my poster about a horse giving birth. I got very descriptive about the steps of the whole process. I included pictures as well. This time around I am going to do the process of floating a horse's teeth. It's not a very long process but to me it is interesting how people do it. There are several unique ways to do it and I plan to do it over the best one I can find. Along with all this information I will include pictures showing you what I am talking about. Floating is when someone files down the horse’s teeth. Horse’s chew with a sort of sideways grinding motion and after a while many develop sharp edges and points. That is when it is time to float them. I hope to post a picture of the poster when I am finished. Maybe I will be able to teach you something new!
About this past week now I had been working on the tri-fold board that we used at the basketball game. On that board we included the jellyfish trip we took, halloween science experiments, and each of our own individual projects. First, with the jellyfish side we put pictures, one of an actual jellyfish that was caught and then a group picture of everyone that participated in going. On the other side of the board we got the halloween science experiments that we did. We each paired up and had an experiment that we practiced and then performed for 1st and 2nd graders. They all really enjoyed what we had! We had exploding pumpkins, floating bubbles, cornstarch and water, to shooting fog! We even got all the kids really involved and interacting with what we did.
There is a lot of different things you can do with photography. But I will admit I am still a little stuck. I have thought of making a little homemade studio where I can learn to take different photos with different types of lighting. But I need some ides of supplies that would be great to use. I am interested in taking pictures that can emphasize different types of lighting positions. I also plan using those pictures I take and put them on shutter stock to show them off.
Over this past week I have looked at different tips and stories from other people that know a lot more about photography then I do. I researched the different types of lighting for macro photography. I usually prefer not to use flash at any time because most of the time it ends up making the picture not look good but the website I found, photographylife.com gave a lot of good tips on how to make that flash in the picture look better. I also learned about photo essays. It’s a picture along with a short captain. The picture should explain more than the person did on the captain.
Over the course of the three days of doing Halloween science experiments, we learned new things about chemicals and what happens when you mix them together, learned how to get involved with the kids, and just have fun! My partners and I projects were corn starch and water, and floating bubbles. We mixed corn starch and water into a rubber made container. It took quite a bit of stirring to get it perfect so we could make it fun and have people walk across it. The kids really enjoyed being able to touch it and run their fingers through it. We even got a teacher to come up and walk across it. The floating bubbles on day 1 worked perfect. We put baking soda and vinegar into a fish tank and blew the bubbles in as the baking soda was fizzing. That first day we got tons of the bubbles that were floating around in that tank. The second day we couldn’t get it to work as good. But we kept trying anyways.
I have learned some things while trying to take macro photos. I have learned that it is harder then it really looks. You have to have a nice steady hand to be able to capture a picture without it being blurry. It took me quite a few try's to even learn how close to get to the object. Once you figure a good distance you have to then worry about the type of lighting you have around you. I learned that it does not help to have bright lighting. The bright lighting will really throw your picture off. It happened to me a few times. Then i tried to make the lighting not so bright. But then it was a little too dark. In the end its just a lot of trial and errors.
Photography is important to me because photos are one thing that you can never replace. Photographs are our personal story, a time line of our lives filled with people and things that mean the most to us. Photos can be more than just a memory, it can be the story of one’s life. I like to also take pictures of nature. To me it is a nice relaxing way to calm your nerves.
