November 2015, PC STEAM Science took part of their own Spooky Science Day in front of Perry Central's 1st and 2nd graders. SteamSci decided to take a break from researching and give the younger students a show to display how fun and exciting science is. The Spooky Days were planned around Halloween and Fall, as most experiments were related to the holidays. The science experiments lasted for three days for 35 minutes each day. All the classes were super excited for the Spooky Day.
Amber and Addy kicked off the experiments with Quicksand Goo. They showed the students how if you made a fast action like punching or walking on the Goo it was a solid. But if you let your hands rest on the goo, they would begin to sink and it would be tough to get them out. Amber and Addy had some volunteers from the student section to try out the reactions of the goo. They even got Mrs. Lynton, a 2nd grade teacher, to walk on the goo. The students were amazed!
Lane and Logan got the kids really excited, as they were asking kids if they carved a pumpkin and if their pumpkins exploded! The boys showed how if you set calcium carbonate and water on fire, it builds up gas inside of the pumpkin and BOOM! The pieces went flying, some kids got very close to the flying eyeballs.
After exploding pumpkins, came the exploding bubbles, presented by Aaron and Sam. As they bumped hydrogen gas into water to make bubbles, Aaron filled his palms with hydrogen bubbles. Mrs. Harris lit them on fire to make a POP! Aaron got a little nervous, as Mrs. Harris got very close to his skin with flames.
Addy and Amber brought out the floating bubbles. You would think from experience, that when you blow bubbles, they eventually fall to the ground. But if you mix baking soda and vinegar as a base instead of the ground, the bubbles would bounce between the air and never towards the ground. Many kids were amazed by the bubbles and how they stayed and didn’t pop.
Olivia and Ryann presented their Boo Bubbles, created by dry ice and warm water reaction, plus soap. Against pure cotton the bubbles just sat there, but when you touch them with your bare hands, they pop into smoke. They had a few volunteers to pop the bubbles. The girls acquired a method from scientist online to make their own dry ice, by trapping CO2 in a pillowcase. The kids loved the various bubble displays.
Logan and Lane brought out the pumpkins again, but this time they didn’t exploded it, but instead were oozing. They were asking the students, if any of their pumpkins ever threw up or got sick. The combined hydrogen peroxide and nitrogen iodine, plus soap to make a foamy oozing pumpkin. The kids got really excited!!
The last experiment was to get everybody involved, as it did. Olivia and Ryann created a fog drum like Steve Spangler. They use 5 gallon buckets and a big trash can to demonstrate different sizes of fog drums. Next they made it a challenge for students. Every kid put a cup on their head, while other students attempted to knock them off by using the fog drum that pumped out a fog ring. It was a great experiment to end on.
Overall the Spooky Science Day was all that Spooky, but it was still very exciting. Students have commented with positive notes and that we should have another very soon. Spooky Science was a true success!
