Overall, I thought the Halloween experiments were a success. The kids seemed to love it and I enjoyed watching kids reactions after every project. The experiments that my partner Lane and I conducted would be average one day and triumphant the other. For our exploding pumpkin, the pieces just barely fell out the first day we lit the calcium carbide. So we decided to amp up the carbide the next day, and the pieces, including the top of the pumpkin went flying. Some of the kids were even scared the next time we brought the pumpkin out because of the large boom. We tried the same thing the next day, but our timing must have been off, because there was just a normal explosion. The first two days for our oozing pumpkin struggled to have a reaction when the hydrogen peroxide and soap were combined with potassium iodide. The problem was that the iodide stuck to the beaker when we poured it into the peroxide, which caused only a small reaction. So to fix our experiment, Lane and I decided to pour the hydrogen peroxide and soap into the potassium iodide. We also doubled the amount of everything, which all contributed to the most sick pumpkin I have ever seen. It was very nasty to clean up, but the kids seemed to think it was funny, and that's all what matters.
